IKEA introduced a vegan alternative to their regular hot dog, part of their commitment to offering vegetarian and vegan versions of their classics. The vegan hot dog, consisting of kale, red lentils, carrots, and ginger, was introduced in Malmö, Sweden, in February 2018, and gained a 95% approval rating. It is now available in Europe, America, and other international locations.
IKEA’s hot dogs are tailored to each country’s taste preferences. In Germany, pickles and fried onions are available as toppings; in Kuwait, corn dogs are served; and in Sweden, there is a bread-wrapped hot dog. In Japan, a charcoal-infused, foot-long hot dog with a jet-black bun called the “ninja dog” is available, as well as cherry blossom-themed hot dogs during spring.
IKEA is committed to reducing food waste through its “Food is Precious” initiative. By 2020, IKEA aims to have halved all its food waste, including pre- and post-consumer waste. As of January 2019, 247 out of 423 stores had reduced 1,786,605 kilograms of food waste, equaling roughly 4,003,896 meals. This initiative highlights IKEA’s dedication to sustainability and its responsibility as a global food provider.
